According to an article in the Waterloo Courier about a New York Society meeting, Henry Sherman was born in Onondaga County, New York.
Henry is first found in the Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., Iowa, census of 1860. His first wife was Mary Jane, maiden name unknown. His children by her were Alice D. (or Dulle A.), and Genevieve Lillian.
What happened to Mary Jane and Alice is not known, but they disappeared from the records by 1867 when Henry married Willhelmenia M. Willaven. Willhelmenia gave birth to a daughter, Laura. According to records concerning Laura's death, Henry and Wilhelmina divorced. Other documents in private possession indicate they did not have an amicable divorce or good post-divorce relationship. When Henry died, his body was turned over to Wilhelmina, and she had him buried in an unmarked grave.
Willhelmenia kept both girls with her after Henry's death and married James W. Hulburt, in 1869. Apparently she and James did not tell Genevieve that Willhelmenia was her stepmother rather than her biological parent until she was as adult. Both girls knew from early on that James was their stepfather.
According to the editorial in the "Waterloo Courier," Henry was one of the first to settle in the community and is responsible for giving Waterloo its name. At various times he owned a hotel named the Sherman House, operated a market, and ran a livery stable. He was a member of the New York Society and was known to bet on the horses.
As successful as Henry had been in Waterloo, he had a rather unfortunate end, apparently dying as a result of alcoholism or a drug addition. Even though his ex-wife could afford a headstone for poor Henry, she had him buried in an unmarked grave. A WPA cemetery transcription shows that an H. Sherman (the only person with that surname)is buried in the Waterloo Cemetery. No other information is given, but presumably this is Henry.
Several people have tried unsuccessfully to find more information about Henry, Mary Jane and their daughter Alice/Dulle. If anyone knows anything at all about any of them, please contact me by e-mail.
