Joseph Darrell Luquer was born in Jamestown, NC, the second son of Herbert and Annie Jane (Garrett) Luquer. He graduated from Jamestown High School and entered the Navy soon after his graduation. He served as a cook on an aircraft carrier in the south Pacific during WWII. Darrell was sent to Nashville, TN, for training while in the military. It was there he met Mildred Jackson while both were waiting at a bus stop. They were soon married, and Darrell remained in the Nashville area after his military service was completed. He worked for the Ford plate glass plant.

Darrell was an accomplished musician and had a gift for playing the guitar. He also had a talent for woodworking and made clocks for many of his friends and relatives.
