Ruby was born 17 Sep 1919 in High Point, NC. When she was about two years of age, her family moved to Jamestown so her mother could care for her parents in their last years. Ruby graduated from Jamestown High School in 1936. After her graduation, she worked briefly for the post office and at the time of her marriage was employed as a timekeeper for Harris-Covington hosiery mill. After marrying her husband Max in 1947, they travelled all over the country since Max's job as a surveyor for the US Department of Commerce required frequent moves. In 1962 she moved back to Guilford County with her daughter to decrease the number of moves necessary during her high school career, while Max continued to travel until his retirement. Her last move was the day before her 16th wedding anniversary and it was her 40th move.

Ruby was a superb cook and a talented seamstress. She was especially good at crochet, making numerous doilies for her friends. Ruby died August 30, 1993 of a heart attack in her sleep.
