Mamie is the youngest daughter of, Henry Calhoun and Josephine Texas Gillespie. She was born in Franklin COUNTY GA. Married Jess Melton and moved to Schoolfield (now Danville) VA. Her husband Jess Melton was the Chief of Police in Schoolfield for many years. Their oldest daughter Minnie's funeral will be tomorrow, (September 11, 2004) near the coast, in NC. They also had George, Henry, Jim, Lola and Jean.
She was a sister to Jones Onest Gillespie, Maude Lola Gillespie-Gaydon, and Cora Gillespie. Also Lou, Baby and Zora, siblings that died as infants.
Mamie was a wonderful Christian lady. I have read many letters she wrote to her brother and you could tell she loved the Lord.
Mamie died in child birth as did her newborn child. They were buried together. The baby was a boy.
Please leave a flower for my dear Grandmother. Thank you!!!
