Oceana Early Settler Dead -- Mrs. Frances D. Newman Resided Many Years in Otto Township -- Mrs. Frances D. Newman, 69 years old, an early settler of western Michigan, died Sunday at Hackley Hospital. Mrs. Newman was born in Penn Yan, N.Y., Sept. 9, 1859, being the second younger of seven sisters. She came to Michigan with her parents in 1865, first living in Grand Rapids for two years and then moving to their homestead in Otto Township, Oceana county, where she grew to womanhood. She was married to Fred R. Newman Oct. 31, 1880, settling in Ferry Township, where the couple developed a productive farm. Mr. and Mrs. Newman were the parents of six children: Herman F. Newman, of Bethany; Katherine Williams, of Muskegan; Robert H. Newman, of Muskegon Heights; Charles H. Newman, Detroit; Mark Newman of Ferry; and Goldie Newman of Muskegon, all of whom survive. She also leaves six sisters: Rachel Hawley, Hesperia; Addie Cargill, Hart; Florence Royle, Ferry; Carrie Stephenson, Portland, Ore.; Maud Carpenter, Benton Harbor; and Bertha Giddings of Muskegon. There are also four grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. Mr. Newman died April 17, 1927. Mrs. Newman was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Ferry. The body will be taken to Ferry when condition of highways permit. Burial will be made in Otto Cemetery, Oceana County. (Muskegon Chronicle, January 19, 1929)
