Millbrook Round Table, 10 Feb 1966
John Massarelli came to Millbrook from Fondi in 1917 at the age of 18. He left home with all the enthusiasm of youth to seek his fortune in the New World. In Millbrook, he lived with his aunt, Mrs. Amelia Pannozzo, and went to work at Hope Farm — now Greer School. Then he had an opportunity to work as a gardener at Dieterich's estate at Millbrook. He worked there until the U.S. entered World War I and he enlisted in the army. After the war, Massarelli returned to Millbrook, and in 1920, he married Miss Maria Amelia Magnarella. He again worked at Hope Farm until he accepted a position of mail truck driver at Bennett School, while Miss Friend Bennett, the founder, was still there. He held that position for 25 years. Then he accepted the position of gardener at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie. He held that position until he retired.
Massarelli was interested in all the affairs of Millbrook. He was a member of the Italian Society, and a popular player on the village baseball team. He purchased a 16-room house at Alden Place for $5,000, and opened a small grocery store in the house. His wife died, leaving him with five children and he married Miss Josephine Casacceppa from Brooklyn. They were the parents of three children. He lost one son in World War II. His daughter, Mrs. Fanny Anderson is a cook at the Dutchess County Home and Infirmary.
