Maynard K. Bennett, 85, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James United Methodist Church, with a luncheon to follow. Private family graveside services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Bennett was born Aug. 3, 1920, to Julius and Martha Bennett in Stickney, S.D. He left South Dakota, with his parents in 1927, to settle in Sioux City. He attended Whittier Grade School, East Junior High School and graduated from East High School in 1939.

He spent his early years after high school driving trucks for Wilson Package and Delivery Co. until he entered military service in 1942. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe, flying as a crew chief and aerial engineer on C-47s. They carried troops, gliders and supplies to the fronts and brought back wounded. He received the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and several Battle Stars. He was honorably discharged following the end of the war in 1945. He attended Morningside College, taking pre-engineering courses and later transferred to the University of Iowa, graduating in 1950, with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

He married Phyllis J. Blakely on April 4, 1947, at St. James United Methodist Church in Sioux City. After graduation from the University of Iowa, he began his career at Iowa Public Service Co. as a junior engineer. He worked in various engineering capacities until his retirement as a system operations manager in December 1982.

He was a lifetime member of Sigma Pi Sigma National Physics Honor Society. He served as a past chairman and member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He was a member of the American Legion Post 64, a past member of the Lions Club and a longtime member of the Sioux City Senior Center. He was a lifetime member of St. James United Methodist Church, where he had been active in the senior choir for many years and had served on the board there in previous years.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two daughters, Pama L. Bennett of Sioux City and Linda and her husband, Bob Claerhout, of Hudson, Wis.; a grandson, Ben Sutton of Corpus Christi, Texas; two granddaughters and their husbands, Joy and Anthony Locke of Etowah, Tenn., and Sara and Sean Butler of Little Rock Ark.; a sister, Phyllis Rule of Canal Winchester, Ohio; two brothers and their wives, Delbert and Janie Bennett of Fenton, Mo., and Bill and Anna Mae Bennett of Woodland Hills, Calif.; an aunt, Julia Crow of Sioux City; two great-grandchildren, Shae and Jordan Locke of Etowah, Tenn.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Forrest and Lila Blakely of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Joyce Bennett of Sioux City; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gilford H. Bennett; and a brother-in-law, Walter Rule.

A memorial will be established in his memory at St. James United Methodist Church.
