Crane Delbert Bennett

Crane Delbert Bennett, formerly of Sioux City, passed away on Jan. 15, 2013.

Born in Stickney, S.D., on April 8, 1916, to Julius Medford and Martha Sprick Bennett. He grew up in South Dakota and Iowa. He graduated from East High School in Sioux City in June 1934.

On Sept. 24, 1938, Crane and Jane were married in Sioux City. Delbert served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed the Pacific Theater of Operations. They celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary in 2012.

Delbert and Janie had seven children, Dr. Thomas Jerman Bennett of Moses Lake, Wash., Curtis Delbert Bennett of Lawrence, Kan., Jon Michael Bennett died of cancer at the age of 5 in 1950, twins, Peter Alan and Laura Louise of St. Louis, and Janie Ruth of Omaha. The seventh, Hugh Gilford, resides in Gillette, Wyo.

Delbert and Janie, both of whom graduated from high school during the Great Depression, encouraged their children to get a college education. That they were successful is evidenced by the fact that their children and grandchildren have accumulated 43 college and university degrees, including five doctorates.

While in their 50s, Delbert and Janie each got their bachelor's degrees from the University of Oklahoma. Delbert and Janie were lifelong Christians, being pillars of both the Church of the Nazarene and The Salvation Army. They lived in Iowa, Missouri, and Oklahoma.

Delbert's vocational career was with the Post Office, and as a free lance writer. He authored two books and more than 1,000 articles and puzzles, which were printed and distributed by Christian publishing houses.
