Maria was the tenth of twelve children of John Tucker and Ann (Roelofson) Scott. The Scott family left their home in Illinois in 1852 and traveled the Oregon Trail losing two family members along the way. William Neill, the youngest traveler, died in the Blue Mountains in or near Idaho and Maria's mother Ann died 30 miles west of Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Both were buried along the trail. There had been a younger daughter Alice who died the day she was born a year before the family left Illinois.

In 1854, when Maria was seven years old, her father, in a tear-stained letter that still exists, placed her in the care of her oldest sister Mary Frances who had married, in 1853, Amos Cook in Lafayette. The Cook's first child, Edith M., was born in 1854 and died three years later. Maria's first child Edith May, may have been named after her.

Maria (her gravemarker has Sarah M.) married James Monroe Kelty on June 23, 1869 in Canemah, Clackamas, Oregon. It's possible that the wedding took place at the home of her sister Catherine who had married John Read Coburn in 1857 in Lafayette, Oregon Territory. The Coburn's had moved to Canemah where John was a Willamette River Steamboat Captain until his death in 1868.

After their marriage, Maria and husband 'Roe' moved to Lafayette where their house still stands and for years has served as the "Kelty House B & B." James Monroe Kelty was the Sheriff of Yamhill County and later worked for the US Customs Service after he and Maria moved to Portland in 1893.

Maria and Roe had four children.
