Melville was born in Chicago, the beloved, red-haired, son of Jenny Maud Wilcox and Peter Duncan Finlayson. He was the loving husband of Marion Snow (Cornelius) Finlayson. Marion was also born in Chicago and they married on June 24, 1921. He was the honored and treasured father of Marion Marcella, Melville Duncan, Jane Constance, John Douglas, Helen Estelle, Nancy Ellen, James Philo (Donald), Dorothy Ethel, Margaret Martha and Charlotte Patricia Finlayson. And Melville is forever cherished by innumerable grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Melville taught students how to play the bagpipes and was a life-long member of the Chicago Highlanders (a band of Scottish-American bagpipers) who were honored to be asked to be a part of Queen Elizabeth's only official state visit to Chicago in 1959 and were part of her reception on Navy Pier. As his proud granddaughter, I am so happy that my Mother pointed him out to me on television that day, as he was piping along side of her limo as well. Quite a memorable event for Chicago and one for me to cherish forever. Melville also served in WW I.
