Lawrence W. Garrett was born to Emily and Lucien Garrett of Onawa, Iowa in 1891, one of nine children. When his father died in Dec. 1893 of typhoid fever, it led to the family falling apart. The older children were on their own or in foster homes, but the younger ones, like Lawrence, were placed in adoptive homes by the Nebraska Children's Society of Omaha, Nebraska. He served in WWI, married Alice Welton and had one child, a son named Lawrence D. Garrett, born 1922.
