Viola Schaffer was born Lily Belle Garrett to Lucian and Emily Garrett. After Lucian died of typhoid fever in 1892, Emily gave up custody of her 9 children. Lily was adopted by the Robert McVickers family of Cozad, Nebraska, and renamed Viola. She married Godfrey "Duke" Schaffer of Hastings, NE, while her biological sister Inez/Ina married Jacob Schaffer, Duke's brother. Viola and Duke had one daughter, Maxine Marian.
