Emily Cole was born to Mary Cresswell and Frederick Cole, but her father died soon after. Her mother remarried to a George W. Reed, and Emily was called Emiline Reed. She marrried Lucian Garrett of Onawa, Monona County, Iowa and they lived on the shores of Blue Lake nearby. They raised nine children, but Lucian died of typhoid fever in 1893, leaving Emily with the kids. She made mistakes that led to her losing her farm and giving up custody of her children. The older ones went to foster homes, the youngest were adopted. See Ancestry.com. Emily married three more times, to older men who she kept house for, the last one a Levi Blakeley in California. She is buried next to her son Fred Garrett, in Oakland's Evergreen Cemetery.
