1892 – 1965
Emil L. Silverness, 72, retired Mondovi postmaster, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, February 18 at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
He had been a patient since Jan. 24 for treatment of a broken kneecap he received in a fall here. His condition, however, was not serious.

In 1917 he began working as a teller in the First National Bank and in 1934 he received an appointment by President Roosevelt to serve as postmaster. During his 17 years in the office he organized city mail delivery and also was cited for his sales of U.S. Savings Bonds.
From 1951 until 1962, he served as a rural mail carrier, first on Route 4 and then on Route 3.
Mr. Silverness, a lifelong area resident, was born in the Town of Naples October 25, 1892, and was graduated from the Mondovi High School in 1916 and the University of Wisconsin in 1921. He played in the Army band in France during World War I.
Surviving are his wife, the former Keziah Severson of Strum, whom he married Aug. 25, 1937; one daughter, Mrs. Arlin Snesrud, Minneapolis; and two brothers, John, Mondovi, and Nels Alvin, Horicon.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 20 at 2 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church here, the Rev. Harold Haugland officiating. Rurial was in Oak Park Cemetery.
