In 1910 he and his parents and six siblings lived on Herron Avenue in Penn Township, Allegheny County, PA. His father worked as a flagman for a railroad.

In 1920 he and his parents and three siblings--Robert, Mabel, and Virginia--lived in a house they owned at 703 Herron Avenue in Verona, PA. (This was probably where they lived in 1910, as Herron Avenue is all within Verona.) His father, brother, and he all worked for a steam railroad, his father as a brakeman, Robert as an electrician, and he as a laborer.

In 1930 he and his wife and their three children lived in a house they were renting for $30 a month at 484 Center Avenue in Verona, PA. They did have a radio. He worked as a manager at a grocery store.

In 1940 he and Elizabeth and their three children lived in a house they were renting for $20 a month at 469 Poplar Street in Verona. He worked as a life insurance agent, with an income in 1939 of $2850 for 32 weeks of work.
