Torgny was the oldest son of Ingeborg and Henry Loe. He was born on October 13, 1912, in Ross, Mountrail County, ND. He was about 15 years old when his mother died in 1927. The break up of the family, due to her death, was devastating for all of the children as well as their father.

Torgny lived in Fargo for awhile, then he farmed near Sanish, ND, until he was drafted into the U.S. Army July 3, 1942. He served in the European, African, and Middle East theaters during World War II. He was discharged February 22, 1945 with the rank of PFC. After the war he lived and worked in North Dakota, Washington, and Illinois. The loss of his brother and best friend, Sidney, during the war, was overwhelming for Torgny. He never fully recovered from that loss.

Torgny died at the North Chicago VA Hospital on December 22, 2001. A memorial service was held at Riverview Cemetery northwest of New Town, ND, on June 22, 2002, honoring Torgny and his brother, Sidney. Bethel Lutheran Pastor Grant Patterson presided over the service and the New Town Legion Post Honor Guard performed a salute to the fallen veterans. A memorial marker for Torgny was placed at the Riverview Cemetery, which overlooks the site of the former town of Sanish, where the Loe family resided for several years.
