Henry was born to Anna Hansdatter Loe in Goodhue County Minnesota on January 22, 1880. He had two half sisters on his maternal side. They were Laura Berg of Trondheim, Norway and Elise Loe Eastwood.

Henry married Eliza Maria Bonde (aka Elise) in Lakota, ND, on May 9, 1903. Eliza was from the McVille, ND area. They had one son, Harold Melvin Loe, born on February 28, 1903. (Since his birth date was prior to their marriage date, it is not clear if he was Henry's biological son or an adopted son.) They homesteaded north of Ross, ND. Eliza filed for divorce in June 1910; their divorce was finalized on July 25, 1910. Eliza changed her last name back to Bonde and was given custody of Harold. She later went by Marie or Maria.

Henry married Ingeborg Larsgaard on September 17, 1910, in Mountrail County, ND. They lived near White Earth, ND, and then Sanish, ND. (Their land was flooded when the Garrison Dam was built.) Together they had eight children - Torgny, Mildred, Sidney, Ruth, Elgin, Amber, Vivian, and Karl, and raised Ingeborg's daughter, Maude. Ingeborg died shortly after Karl was born. Because of the drought and economic depression, Henry was not able to manage the household and support all of his children. The younger children were placed in the Fargo Children's Home and/or foster homes. Karl was later adopted and renamed, Vernon Jacobson.

Henry lived in Goodhue County, Minnesota; Sioux City, Iowa; Michigan, North Dakota; Ross, North Dakota; White Earth, North Dakota; Sanish, North Dakota, and Spokane, Washington.

Henry was not able to find work in North Dakota, so he moved to Spokane, Washington, about 1939, to work in the paper mills. He wrote letters and visited his children as often as he was able. He was a member of the Lutheran Church.

He died of acute myocardial decompensation at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane on August 12, 1954. A service was held in the Gothic Chapel at the Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home on August 16th with Reverend Robert S. Wilch officiating. He was laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery following the funeral.

(His death certificate said his father was Sam Amble, but his draft registration said his father was Karl Loe.)
