Bill Arnold Adkins, 77, of Collinsville, died Saturday, July 7 at his home.

He was born Nov. 5, 1929, in Stuart, to Thomas Everett Adkins and Sally Eggleston Adkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert Adkins, Wendall Adkins and Lawrence "Sam" Adkins.

Adkins was the founder and owner/operator of Bill Adkins Construction Co. and he recieved of a number of community service and leadership awards.

Adkins has been associated with the construction company since 1955, when his father got out of the building business and Adkins and one of his brothers teamed up for themselves, according to a 1987 article in the Martinsville Bulletin. In July 2003, Adkins' 50-year career was celebrated at the business in Collinsville.

He founded and was past president of the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He served on the Virginia Baptist General Board in Richmond and on the board of Hope Tree, formerly Virginia Baptist Children's Home in Salem.

He was a member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church and the Wade Lawrence Sunday School Class, and served as a deacon and taught the Men's Sunday School class. He served with the Henry County Baptist Association and the Development Committee for the Richmond Seminary. He also served on the Salvation Army's Capital Campaign Cabinet.

In 2002, he was awarded the Jack Dalton Community Service Award. He served on the Henry County Public Service Authority board for a number of years; had served on the board of directors of Piedmont Trust Bank, the Henry County Planning Commission, Patrick Henry Community College Educational Foundation, the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce and Martinsville-Henry County Apartment Council.

Adkins received the Beducian-Gusler Award, which is given by the Homebuilders Association of Martinsville and Henry County to a person who has "been active in community service, has promoted the building industry and placed the needs of others before his own," according to the award.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Irene Minter Adkins of the home; one daughter, Shirley Adkins Craven of Snow Creek; four sons, Stanley Adkins, Dennis Adkins and Bruce Adkins, all of Collinsville, and Ken Adkins of Martinsville; a sister, Ruth Adkins Price of Collinsville; two brothers, John G. Adkins of Collinsville and David O. Adkins of Fieldale; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
