James D. Ashley, 91, 42 Nightengale Avenue died Friday morning, December 19, 1980 at Massena Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for four days.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary C. Belair, with whom Mr. Ashley resided; one son, Harold J. of Florida; one brother, Leo (Grant) Ashley of Waddington; four sisters, Mrs. Frank (Sadie) Simser of Endicott, NY, Mrs. Mabel Prescott of Liverpool, NY, Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Premo, Massena, Mrs. Francis (Lena) Kearns of Massena; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Ashley was born in Norfolk on May 21, 1889, the son of Charles and Catherine Sharlow Ashley. He was one of 16 children. The Ashley family were early descendants of early Massena residents and had farmed on the Cook Street Road for many years. Mr. Ashley worked at Alcoa in Massena for 48 years as the superintendent of the carpentry shop, retiring in 1957.
On October 12, 1912, he married Minnie Merkley. Mrs. Ashley died on November 23, 1972. Mr. Ashley was a member of the 25 Year Club at Alcoa and a communicant o Sacred Heart Church.
