He was a son of Henry and Sarah Eccord Valentine. He married Susannah Pontius on on November 18, 1866. They had 13 children: Gertrude, Arthur, Daisy, Cora, Bertha, Monroe, Alice, Edna, Sadie, Harry, Jennie and Mrs. K.D. Groce. One child is deceased.

He served as Trustee of Washington Twp. for eight years. He was a farmer and a thresher.
