Frank Galvin, Veteran GN Engineer, Dies

Frank Galvin, 76, 619 3rd Ave. SW., a pioneer Great Northern engineer, died at his home Sunday afternoon after an illness of a year. Funeral arrangements are pending at O'Connor's.

Galvin was born Aug. 3, 1880, at St. Paul. He joined the Great Northern at Butte in 1908 and in 1918 moved to Great Falls with his family.

While with the GN, Galvin served on the Billings and Butte runs and three times was selected as the engineer for Jim Hill's special train while it was on the Great Falls Division.

During an exhibition he piloted the William Crooks, the GN's No. 1 engineer, on a run to Lewistown and made the original non-stop run from Great Falls to Laurel.

He retired in 1944. Galvin was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Eagles Lodge, the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers and the Great Northern Veterans' Assn.

Survivors include his widow, Margaret; a son, Patrick Galvin; seven daughters, Mrs. Frances Gleason, Mrs. Ruth Butler, Mrs. Helen O'Connell, Mrs. Connie Golightly, Mrs. Audrey Cefro and Mrs. Marjorie Jimenez, all of Great Falls, and Mrs. Hazel Mauch of Saco; 27 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and a niece and nephew.
