Sarepta was born as the 4th child to Helen and Walter Leake Brockman in the Dairy Dale area of Cedar Rapids. She was named after her dad's youngest sister (who died at the age of 15) a few years before she was born. When she was an infant, the family moved to Benton County, where they farmed a homestead south of Shellsburg near the Vinton-to-Cedar Rapids road. When she was 13, the family moved to a farm near Blairstown. Her family also operated a nursery on this farm.

On September 13, 1876, Sarepta married Willis Herbert Barnes. He was a Civil War veteran who had applied for and received a soldier's pension.

Sarepta and Willis were living in Blairstown, Iowa in the 1880 census, and his occupation was listed as Express Agent. She was listed as housewife. They suffered a lot of grief over the death of their first four children who died as infants or young children.

In 1900, the Barnes family is living in Storm Lake, Iowa. In 1904, after Willis died, Sarepta applied for his widow's pension. In 1911, Sarepta was listed as living in LeMars, Iowa by her brother, Dr. David Brockman. Sarepta was reported to be living with her widowed sister, Margaret Rutan, in Riverside, California later in her life before she died.

They have another child named Marguerite Barnes born about May 1891, d. unknown, and was listed as being alive in the 1911 family paperwork.
