She was named after her dad's youngest sister (who died at the age of 15) a few years before she was born. When she was an infant, the family moved to Benton County, where they farmed a homestead south of Shellsburg near the Vinton-to-Cedar Rapids road. When she was 13, the family moved to a farm near Blairstown. Her family also operated a nursery on this farm.
