Walter Jr. was born on a farm in Parkers Grove, Benton County Iowa. When he was 11 years old, his family moved to another farm outside of Blairstown, Benton County, Iowa. They also operated a nursery on this farm as well.
He married Adeline Smith on September 5, 1875 in Jefferson, Greene County, Iowa.
In 1880 the family was living in Jackson, Sac County, Iowa and Walter Jr. was working as a photographer. In 1900, the family was living in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa and Walter was working as a carpenter. They lost a son in 1893 who was less than 2 years old. Another son died in 1905 in a ship explosion.
The family ended up leaving Iowa and moving to the San Francisco, California area after the big earthquake in 1908. Walter worked as a cabinet maker and building contractor, as did some of his sons, in helping to rebuild the city.
Adeline died in 1925 at 59 years old and Walter died in 1936 at age 78. They are buried together with their oldest son, Wilbur, who never married and lived with them until their deaths.
