John was born a twin to his sister Catherine (Cassie) Brockman on his parent's farm in Parkers Grove, south of Shellsburg, Iowa. His parents, Walter and Helen Brockman, are listed as part of the original founders of the Parkers Grove Church near where the cemetery is located.
John died of the measles, which was very hard on his family. There were a number of boys born into the family later on who were named John in his honor. His brother, Dr. David Crawford Brockman, had his only grandson named John David Brockman.
John had 2 older half brothers and 6 older siblings:
