George Sayles, a former county and city official and well known in the valley, passed away Wednesday morning at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Mollie R. Dixon, after an illness of several months. He was first confined to his bed in Seattle about 10 weeks ago and was brought to Ellensburg only recently in hopes that the change of climate would prove beneficial. Death was due to chronic bronchitis with complications that caused the collapse of the lungs.
Mr. Sayles was born in Olympia in 1872 and moved to Ellensburg with his parents in 1889. He made his home here and in Cle Elum until 1916 when he moved to Seattle and entered business in the University District.
George Sayles was prominent in community affairs during his residence here. He was a charter member of the Elks Lodge and served as its first secretary. Funeral services are to be conducted by the order Friday afternoon at 2:30. Burial will be in the Poyser family plot in the Odd Fellows' Cemetery here.
Mr. Sayles was active in county and city politics, serving for six years as city clerk and four years as county clerk. While city clerk he also acted as a justice of the peace.
After retiring from the county clerk's office, he purchased the Club Cigar store and conducted the business for several years. Later he went to Cle Elum with his brother-in-law and the two men operated the Reed Hotel there for nearly six years. He was married in Ellensburg to Miss Millie Poyser who survives him as does a 5 year-old son. Both were here during his illness as was his mother who lives in Seattle.
He is survived by two brothers and two sisters, C. M. Sayles of Seattle, recently of Ellensburg and Roy Sayles of Seattle. Mrs. Clarence Poland of Ellensburg and Mrs. Alta Richards of Seattle.
