Mr. Bowles was a retired Franklin County Farmer, and also former owner and operator of the Hilltop Inn in Metamora from 1949 through 1970.
He was born in Irvin, Kentucky, July 30, 1898, the son of William and Luanna (Fox) Bowles. He was a member of the Chapel Missionary Baptist Church near Andersonville, in which area he had lived the last nine years. Prior to that he lived in Metamora.
He was married November 6, 1917, to Ethel Hurley, and she survives, with four sons: Samuel Bowles, Toledo, Ohio, Allen Bowles, R.R. 2, Laurel, Merle Bowles, R.R. 2, Rushville and Richard Bowles, Oxford, Ohio; six daughters: Mrs. Viola Rumbly, Hamilton, Ohio, Mrs. Claude (Dovie) Reed, Cortez, Colorado, Mrs. Tony (Sarah) Roark, Somersville, Ohio, Mrs. Jewell Croddy, R.R. 2, Laurel, Mrs. Armeta McQueen, R.R. 2, Rushville, and Mrs. Herman (Betty Jo) Bentley, Sylvania, Ohio; 39 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, one brother and two half-brothers.
The services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, south of Andersonville, with the Rev. James Hundley officiating, and with burial in the Stipps Hill Cemetery in Franklin County. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Thursday at the Laurel Moster and Sons Mortuary in Laurel.
