Rev. Martin E. Gritters, 85, of Pella, died Monday, December 23, at the Pella Community Hospital. Funeral services were held on December 26, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella, with the Rev. John Gorter officiating.

Martin Egbert Jonathan Gritters was born on April 2, 1906 at Boyden. He was the fifth of ten children born to Egbert and Albertje Smidt Gritters. Gritters begin his education attending country schools In Hull and graduated from Western Christian High School in 1923. He then
continued his education at Mornlngside College in Sioux City, and Central College in Pella.

For several years he taught country school near Doon. On August 13, 1931, he was united in marriage with Jeanette Vande Kerk at Hospers and they were the parents of five children: Alberdeen, Frank Martin, Goldie Jean, Edgar John and Arnold Henry.

Gritters was enrolled at the Protestant Reformed Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and graduated in 1932. He served Protestant Reformed Churches in Holland, Michigan; Sioux Center, Iowa; Oak Lawn, Illinois; Pella, Iowa and Bellflower, California. Following these pastorates, he served Christian Reformed Churches in Bellflower, California; Pipestone, Minnesota; and Inwood, Iowa. After he retired from the full-time ministry in 1971, Rev. and

Mr. Gritters returned to Pella where he served as associate pastor at the First Christian Reformed Church for many years until his health failed.

At the time of his death, he was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella where until recently he was active in leading Bible Study Classes and a Greek Bible Reading Class. He enjoyed ministering to those in need. This was evidenced by his involvement in the
founding of Hope Haven In Rock Valley and many other projects.
