Mathias Christian Sigmund was born January 17, 1858, in Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland, the 8th of 9 children of Johann Gottlieb and Mary Elizabeth Firor Sigmund. His paternal grandparents were immigrants Christian and Maria Dorothea Schwarz Sigmund from Sindelfingen, Wuerttemberg, Germany. His maternal grandparents were John Daniel and Margaretta Martin Firor, both born in Frederick County, Maryland. On March 29, 1887, in Berks County, Pennsylvania, Matthias married his 2nd cousin, Adelaide Young Sigmund, daughter of Henry Miller and Adelaide Young Schelly Sigmund. Her paternal grandparents were Christoph Friedrich and Elizabeth Miller Sigmund. Christoph Friedrich Sigmund was a brother of Johann Gottlieb Sigmund, both having immigrated to the U.S. in 1817 as young boys of 10 and 6 years old respectively. Mathias and Adelaide were the parents of 5 children: Mathias, who died at birth, Amy Christine, Irma Adelaide, Jeanette and Olive Katrine Sigmund. None of the daughters ever married, thus ending two lines of Sigmunds. Mathias passed away January 19, 1934, in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, and was buried in the Memorial Mausoleum, Wyomissing, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
