Growing up on her parents' Iowa farm, Iva lettered in girls' basketball for Oakland High School. She began teaching in a "one room school house" to which she drove from home in a Ford Model T about 1924-26 after having received a diploma from Oakland Normal School in 1924 and 1926.

In 1926, she began nurses' training in Omaha and received her diploma as a Registered Nurse (RN) from Lord Lister Hospital May 16, 1929.

On April 15, 1932, her marriage to Max Herbert in Papillion, NE began their life together and their first home was one which Max built at 1552 Walker St, Carter Lake, IA (East Omaha). She continued in her career as a registered nurse until the birth of their son, James.

Iva became a member of the Masonic Order of Eastern Star (OAS), was part of their Daughters of the Nile and the select drill ensemble, "Nile Patrol."

With abilities of playing the piano and singing, she became a member of the Washington School "Mother Singers."

An active church member at Central United Presbyterian Church in Omaha, she served in their activities including the ladies' charitable groups for the church and community.

Iva's final residence was at Hillcrest Assisted Care facility in Bellevue, NE where she passed away on Nov. 27, 1997.

The funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 1, 1997 11AM at John A. Gentleman Westside Chapel in Omaha and she was buried, following cremation, Tuesday, Dec. 2 next to Max at Westlawn-Hillcrest Cemetery in Omaha.
