IKE WALKER DIES MONDAY MORNING
HE WAS ONE OF THE OLDEST CITIZENS OF MORGAN COUNTY
In the death of Ike Walker there passed from time to eternity one of the oldest and best known citizens of Morgan county. He died at the home of his brother, Mr. E.L. Walker near the scene of his birth and where his long life had been spent. He had been in failing health a long while and had been carefully looked after by his neighboring brothers, who gave him every attention.
Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W.S. Adams, of the Madison Baptist church, who read scripture lessons from the Corinthians and spoke of his association with departed friends and as a member of one of the oldest and most distinguished families in this section of Georgia.
There was a large gathering of relatives and friends and a number of beautiful floral designs were sent by friends and relatives. A choir composed of Mrs. W.L. Newton, Mrs. Wilbur Gresham, Prof. J.E. Owen, and Messrs. C.M. Furlow and E.H. Wise sang favorite hymns, "Jesus Savior, Pilot Me" and "In the sweet by and by."
The pallbearers were six nephews--Seaborn Walker of Eatonton, George Walker of Athens, L.H. Walker, Jr., Bob Walker, Evan Walker, and Bryan Walker all of Madison. Interment was in the old Walker cemetery near by, where are buried a sister and several brothers.
Isaac Walker was the eldest child of Seaborn Isaac Walker and Lucy Harwell, and was born at the ancestral home near the scene of his death on July 21st, 1858, being in the 76th year of his age. All of his life had been spent as a farmer and business man in Morgan county, almost his entire life in the immediate vicinity of his death. He was tax receiver of the county for a number of years and was a salesman at different times in the business houses of Madison and Rutledge. He had not been active for a number of years, and lived a quiet life devoid of any show or ostentation.
He never married, and is survived by two brothers, Messrs. L.H. and E.L. Walker. Two brothers died last year--Alva and Will Walker. Another brother, John Walker, died many years ago. A sister, Cornelia(sic) Walker Reid, died some forty years ago. Another sister, Miss Ama Walker, died several years ago at Enterprise, Alabama.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews. The nieces are Mrs. Olivia Byrd, Panama City, Fla., Mrs. Ben Jackson, Vidalia, Ga., Miss Mary Page Walker, Waynesboro, Ga. The nephews, besides the six pallbearers names above, are Edmund Reid, Miami, Walker Reid, Madison, Ellet Walker, Augusta.
Great nieces are Hattie Mina Reid, Madison, Nancy Louise Walker, Eatonton, Estella and Maye Howell Jackson, Vidalia. Great nephews are Isaac Byrd, Panama City, Fla., Ellet C. Walker, Jr., Augusta, and Ben and Walker Jackson, Vidalia.
Ike Walker was an extraordinary man -- in intelligence, in character, and in his fine sense of fairness between man and man. He was kind in heart and generous in spirit. One of the cherished recollections of himis his devotion to his invalid father during the latter's last days. Ike Walker had a mind of his own always. He was fixed in his principles and strong in his convictions. He was a strong character in all of the affairs of life that are worth while.
For many years, he was a member of Antioch Baptist church.
