Michael left Norway in 1879, landing in New York and traveling through the Great Lakes to Wisconsin. He immediately began the process of becoming a citizen and was always a most loyal and patriotic supporter of his adopted country, changing his Norwegian Jensen name to Johnson sometime after he arrived. Two years later he sent for Ingeborg and they were married February 18, 1881 in Green County, Wisconsin. After their marriage they settled on a farm in Lafayette County, near the Township of Woodford. All ten children were born at this farm, one child, Ole, dying in infancy. In 1907 the family moved to another farm near the Township of Wiota.
Michael was one of the most highly respected citizens in that area. He and Ingeborg were very involved in their church, East Wiota Lutheran. All the children were baptized and confirmed there and many married there as well. He died February 2, 1940 on his farm near Wiota and was buried in his church's cemetery on February 6, 1940.
