She was the daughter of John Louis 'Jack' (1879-1952) and Susan Leona 'Leo' Young (1884-1932) Akard.

Siblings:
John Louis "Jack" Akard 1907-1967
George Charles Akard 1909-1983
Leona Ann Akard Fulford 1911-1988
James Miller Akard 1912-1967

When her mother died on the 5th of July 1932 it left her, her father, her sister (Leona), and her Aunt Bert (her mother's sister) at home at 514 Dorman, Indianapolis. (Bert was blind and had refused surgery because she was a Christian Scientist.)

(At that time, too, Dorothy's brother, George, and his wife and daughter, Jackie, were living there. George's daughter, Pat, was born in that house on 11th July 1932 - just 6 days after her grandmother died.)

Dorothy's father worked only parttime as a tailor and they had fallen behind in the rent. The household split up and Bert had eye surgery and could see (with thick glasses) and she got a job as a housekeeper for the Fouts family - a son and his mother. Bert married the son 3 years later at the age of 60.

Leona went to live with a friend from her work, Velva. Dorothy's father went to Henderson, Kentucky to find work. Dorothy went to Chicago (before Leona married in April of 1933). George and family found other accomodations.

Dorothy made periodic visits back to Indianapolis to see the family, but said little about her Chicago life. If she received a call while visiting she would leave immediately to go back to Chicago.

At Chicago she worked in liquor establishments where she met her husband, Harry.

She married Harry Epstein by 1938 in Chicago, Illinois. They had still-born twins - no other children.

Dorothy was in the WACS during World War II. The family has a picture of her in uniform dated June 1943. She was a very beautiful woman with long dark hair and a very svelte figure. Harry was also in the service - family pictures show him in uniform.

Harry owned a night club called "The Miracle Bar" and Dorothy was maitre d' there. Family visited her there in 1945 and at that time Dorothy was still married. Dorothy and Harry divorced between the end of World War II and 1949. (Legend has it that Harry was murdered - probably in the 1950's.)

She came back from Chicago for a while - about 1949/1950. She and her father stayed with her sister, Leona, and family in the area of the County Road dividing Johnson Co and Marion Co and St Rd 135. She then went to stay with her brother, George, and family in Brooklyn, Indiana for about a year - about 1951-1952.

After that she went back to Chicago. Starting about 1963 her whereabouts were unknown to the family. About October of 1980 the Chicago Welfare Department contacted her brother, George, and notified him of her whereabouts. She did not know anyone - combination of Alzheimer's disease and alcohol abuse. She was in a nursing home: Heather Manor Nursing Center in Harvey, Illinois.

She died at age 70 years 8 months 26 days of liver cancer/anemia/hypertension and organic brain _____ (not legible).
