He was the son of James E and Catherine Baldwin Akard.

On the 1880 census Jack is 1 year old so he was born in 1879 - not 1881 as listed on his tombstone. His military records (muster in roll - Corporal in the 3rd Tennessee Infantry in Spanish American War) his age is 19 in 1898 - so born 1879. His correct birth place is Sneedville, Hancock Co, Tennessee per pension records. He and his brother Jesse Decatur Akard were discharged as Corporals, their brother George Mitchell Akard made PFC. They all served in the same outfit. They were due to ship out to Pueto Rico but Peace broke out instead. They never saw action. In one of their Pension files is a letter that accompanied the return of the last pension check he received.

NOTE: In notes kept by George Akard (as told to him by his father: John Louis Akard) the following siblings are listed for John: brother: Frank; brother: Thomas Roy;(married Georgia Henrietta Young Akard (1890-1974);, sister of John's wife, Susan Leona - child Jane;); brother: Marion; (married Daisy Cane - children: Raymond and Mable); brother: George;(married Della Burchell;); brother Jesse Decatur;(married Dora Kyker;); sister: Nora (married Ed Garvin - children: Della Lee and Jane); sister: Bess; (married James Arthur Gantt;); sister: Maggie; (married Joseph Livesey; - children: Gene & Ethel = 2 oldest).

Records indicate that John was married before Susan Leona to Sudie B Cruze on May 14, 1899 in Knoxville, Tennessee and divorced about 1902 - no children.

He married Susan Leona 'Leo' Young on 31 Jan 1907 in Indianapolis, Marion Co, Indiana.

Their children: John Louis 'Jack' Akard Jr (1907-1967); George Charles Akard (1909-1983); Leona Ann Akard Fulford (1911-1988); James Miller Akard (1912-1967) and Dorothy Mary Akard Epstein (1914-1985).

In 1926 he lived on the southeast corner of Market & Oriental Streets in Indianapolis. Their tailor shop: 1st floor; their residence: 2nd floor.

In 1932 he lived at 514 Dorman, Indianapolis.

When his wife, Leo, died in July of 1932, it left him and his two daughters: Leona and Dorothy and his sister-in-law, Bert, at home. At that time his son, George, and his wife and daughter, Jackie, were staying there, too. Six days after Leo died (11 July) George's daughter, Pat, was born in that house. John only worked parttime as a tailor. The household split up soon after her death because they had fallen behind in rent.

Bert (his blind sister-in-law) had previously refused surgery because of her religion (Christian Scientist) but with the death of her sister she had no place to go so she had the surgery and went to live with the Fouts family as a live in housekeeper (a man and his mother - 3 years later Bert married him when she was 60). Leona went to live with a friend, Velva, from the hosiery mill where she worked. Dorothy left for Chicago. John 'Jack' Sr went to Henderson, Kentucky to work. George and his family found other accomodations.

From his obituary: "Born in Baltimore, MD (correct: Sneedville, TN) Mr Akard lived in Indianapolis 46 years before moving to Greenwood recently. He was a tailor at the H P Wasson & Co for 10 years - retiring a year ago. He was a member of the Centre Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shrine in Indianapolis and Elks Lodge at Henderson, KY. He also was a Corporal in the Spanish-American War."

Jack Sr was ill with pneumonia in January of 1952, so his sons, Jack Jr and Jim went to Henderson, KY to bring him back to Indianapolis - the doctor said it was alright. He died in the ambulance on the way home.

He died at age 72 years 11 months 11 days.

Survivors: sisters; Mrs Nora Gerbin and Mrs Bess Gantt (both of Knoxville, TN); brothers: George Mitchell Akard and Jesse Decatur Akard (both of Knoxville, TN); 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
