Lydia Canzadia May (Bennett) (Todd) Dodd was this writer's 3rd cousin through my maternal grandfather's family. Reportedly she went by several different names, including the nicknames of Zadie and Sadie. As a child, she was called Lydia, during her first marriage she was referred to as Canzadia, and during her second marriage as Sadie. My family refers to her as Canzadia.

Canzadia was the daughter of Fielding "Dick" Bennett (1828-1900) and Pembrook (Campbell) (Smith) Bennett (1838-1920). Each of her parents had a previous marriage and one child each from those marriages. Her father's first marriage was to Mary Ann Cornelison who died after their first child was born. Canzadia's half-brother from this marriage was:

John F. Bennett 1854-1930

Her mother's first marriage was to Thomas D. Smith who died when their only child was young. Canzadia's half-brother from this marriage was:

Dr. James Thomas Ditimus Smith 1858-1920

Canzadia's parents were married in 1868 and she was their youngest living child (two younger siblings died in infancy). She had the following full-siblings:

Ezekiel Robinson Day Bennett 1869-1957
Mary Emma Airey Ada Bennett 1871-1941
William Bennett 1878-1878
Lovena Bennett 1879-1883

For some reason, it appears that Canzadia's mother liked giving her children multiple first and middle names as this was true for Canzadia, her older brother and sister, and her half-brother from her mother.

The Bennetts were farmers who were living in the Pure Air community of Adair County, Missouri, when Canzadia was born, and this is where she grew up. In the 1880 census, she was listed as Lydia, age 4, with her parents, her brother Ezekiel (who later went by one of his middle names Robinson) 11, sister Mary 9, and baby sister Lovena 1 who died at age 4, and her 25-year-old half-brother James Smith.

On March 16, 1898, in Boone County, Iowa, Canzadia married William H. Todd who was born in Iowa in 1869. She used the name Canzadia May Bennett on her marriage record. They had 4 known children:

Zadia/Sadie E. Todd 1899-1990
Marie Todd 1900-
Alford Alpha Todd 1901-
George Thomas Todd 1904-1988

In the 1900 census, the Todd family was living in the town of Boone in Des Moines Township, Boone County, Iowa. The household consisted of William Todd 31, Canzadia 23, and daughter Zadia age 1. William's occupation was "day laborer." They were living next door to George Todd 24 and his wife and 2-year-old daughter. This is believed to have been William's brother.

Back in Adair County, Missouri, Canzadia's father, Fielding "Dick" Bennett, died in 1900 and was buried beside Canzadia's two infant siblings, William and Lovena, at Bear Creek Cemetery northwest of Kirksville, Missouri. Canzadia's paternal grandmother, Lydia (Asbell) Bennett, was already buried in this cemetery in the same plot as the infants.

Between 1904 and 1905, William and Canzadia divorced. William remarried in 1907 to a woman named Minnie who was 15 years younger than him and they had 3 known children, Edward, Beryl, and Willie. They continued to lived in Des Moines County, Iowa. In the 1925 census for Iowa, William Todd was living with his daughter by Canzadia, Zadia who was then married to second husband Fredrick Rush and had 3 children from her first marriage to Cornelius Murphy.

Ironically, Canzadia's second marriage was to a man with a very similar last name to that of her first husband. Her two husbands' last names were Todd and Dodd. She remarried sometime between 1905 and 1910 to James Carlile "Carl" Dodd (1875-1942) who was from Kansas. Carl had first been married to Grace Leaverton and had three children, Marie, Ruby, and John. Reportedly, Grace had left Carl sometime after the 1905 Kansas census to be with Carl's younger brother John Dodd.

In the 1910 census of Ottawa Ward 4, Franklin County, Kansas, the Dodd household consisted of Carl Dodd 34, Canzadia 33 (listed as Sadie), Canzadia's mother Pembrook Bennett 70, Canzadia's children Marie 10 and George 5. Canzadia's daughter Zadia and son Alford were listed in their father's household in this census.

Canzadia and Carl Dodd had two known children, twin daughters:

Winnie Maude Dodd 1910-1973
*Minnie Dodd 1910- (died in infancy)

*Note that the name Minnie has not been verified. This name appears in an index of cemetery records in Ottawa, Kansas, and may have been the name of the twin who died.

While living in Ottawa, Kansas, Carl Dodd worked for a family named Bennett who owned a creamery, an ice plant and a bank. (Note that this Bennett family was not related to Canzadia's family that we know of.) A granddaughter of Carl's younger brother, John Poteet Dodd, remembers that she was told Mrs. Bennett, Carl's boss, used to "get after Carl for not taking care of Sadie and the twins."

By the time of the 1915 census, Canzadia and Carl had separated, and Canzadia was still living in Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas. Canzadia's mother Pembrook was no longer with her but was still alive. The household consisted of Canzadia (listed as Sadie) 38, and 4 of her children, Zadia 16, Alford 14, George 10, and Maudie 4.

In 1915, Carl Dodd was living with his 80-year-old father Samuel Dodd in Ottawa, Kansas. Carl's three children by his first marriage were with him, Marie 15, Ruby 13, and John 12. Carl remarried to a woman named Maude sometime between 1915 and 1918. Carl registered for the World War I draft in 1918 and at that time was working as a car carpenter for the M. K. & T. Railway in Parsons, Kansas. In 1920, he and wife Maude and his son, John Dodd, age 17, were living in Labette County, Kansas.

In the 1920 census, Carl Dodd and his wife Maude were living with his son, John Dodd, age 26, and his new wife, Edna, age 24 in Ottawa, Kansas.

Carl Dodd reportedly later remarried a 4th time around 1940 to a much younger woman named Anna. They were living in Ozark, Missouri, in 1942 when Carl was killed in a one-car accident on detour highway 65 and 14 in Christian County, Missouri. Anna was listed as his wife on his Missouri Death Certificate. Family members reported that his wife, Anna, was pregnant at the time of his death. Carl was buried in Parsons, Kansas.

The date of Canzadia's death is currently unknown. It was reported by her brother, Ezekiel Robinson Day Bennett, that both she and their mother, Pembrook Bennett, had moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and both died there. Pembrook's death certificate shows she died on June 12, 1920 in New Orleans, but Canzadia's death certificate cannot be located at this time.
