John F. Bennett was the son of Fielding Dick Bennett (1828-1900) who was born in Kentucky and died in Missouri; and Mary Ann (Cornelison) Bennett (1834-abt 1854) who was born in Indiana and died in Missouri. John's parents each came individually with their parents as early pioneers to Missouri. His parents were married in Putnam County, Missouri on December 6, 1851 when his mother was 17 and his father was 23.

John's middle name is unknown to this writer. I only know his middle initial was F. His middle name may have been Fielding after his father, but this is not known for sure.

The name John was also a family name. He had an Uncle John Bennett, older half-brother of his father Fielding. Also, his paternal great grandfather was John Bennett, Fielding's paternal grandfather.

John had no full siblings. He did have five half-siblings from his father's second marriage to Pembrook (Campbell) Smith (only three of these lived to adulthood:

Ezekiel Robinson Day Bennett 1869–1957
Mary Emma Airey Ada Bennett 1871–1941
Lydia Canzadia May "Sadie" Bennett 1876–
William Bennett 1878–1878
Lovena Bennett 1879–1883

John also grew up with one step-brother who was the son of his step-mother Pembrook from her first marriage to Thomas D. Smith:

Dr. James Thomas Ditimus Smith 1858-1920

John was born in Putnam County, Missouri where his mother and maternal grandparents were from. However, his mother died when he was young. The date of her death is presently unknown by descendants, but it is known that during the Civil War in the early 1860s, John and his father were living with his paternal grandmother and his father's siblings in Schuyler County, Missouri. His mother Mary Ann may have died at his birth, but she was gone at least by 1862. The location of Mary Ann's grave has also been lost to history, although it is believed she is buried in Putnam County, Missouri.

After the Civil War, Fielding Bennett met and married Pembrook (Campbell) Smith in 1868. They farmed in Adair County, Missouri near the area of Kirksville, and also in Macon County, Missouri.

In 1871, John married Elizabeth Wiggans from Macon County, Missouri. They farmed in Independance Township of that county until at least 1880. By the 1900 census, they were living in Chillicothe Township of Livingston County, Missouri, and they lived here the rest of their lives.

They had the following known children:

Earl Bennett 1872 – 1941
John William Bennett 1882 – 1940
Mary Bennett 1882 – 1899
Nora Fanny Bennett 1888 – 1961

John died in 1929 and Elizabeth in 1933. Both are buried at Utica Cemetery.
