William was the infant son of Fielding "Dick" Bennett (1828-1900) who was born in Kentucky and died in Adair County, Missouri; and Pembrook (Campbell) (Smith) Bennett (1838-1920) who was born in Missouri and died in Louisiana.

William and his baby sister Lovena (1879-1883) are buried in the same grave at Bear Creek Cemetery. William was the first to be buried in the Bennett plot which no doubt his father purchased. Eventually, seven Bennetts would be buried in this location: William, and Lovena, their father Fielding Bennett, their grandmother Lydia (Asbell) Bennett, their aunt Mary Polly Bennett, their uncle Ezekiel Bennett, Jr., and his first wife Fanny.
