Suggested edit: James Tilman Coan was born in a box car near Chesterton, Indiana, the 6th child of John Sylvester and Hazel Mae (Williams) Coan. He attended Chesterton High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force on July 25, 1955 and actively serving until May 8, 1961. Jim then served as a reserve until July 24, 1963. During this time he was stationed in Michigan, Alaska and California.

While stationed at Edwards Air Force Base, Edwards, California, Jim met Margaret Isobel "Belle" Porter whom he wed on September 15, 1961. The couple settled in Lancaster, California and to this union, three daughters were born; Kathleen Ann, Colleen Maye and Heather Jean.

Jim worked in construction, eventually owning and operating his own construction businesses in the Antelope Valley; J & M Concrete, Coan Concrete and Coan-Porter Concrete. During his free time, Jim could be found fishing, gardening or tinkering in his garage. Later, he developed a love for puzzles and could be found many evenings, sitting on his porch with his wife, Velma, putting another puzzle together.

Jim eventually relocated to Florida, first to Dunnellon and then settling in Silver Springs. He enjoyed going to dances held at the Singles Club on Saturday nights. It was here that he met Velma Lee Reynolds and the two married on August 17, 2007. Through this marriage, Jim gained his fourth daughter, Denise.

Jim signed up with Marion County Sheriff Office as a volunteer and enjoyed patrolling through the mobile home park with his buddy Fred. Jim spent a lot of free time watching television as evidenced by the fact that he was a life member of the Handyman Club of America, life and trophy member of the North American Fishing Club, life and trophy member of the North American Hunting Club and a life member of the National Home Gardening Club. Jim was also a supporter of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Jim is survived by his wife, Velma, of Silver Springs, FL; daughter Denise (Barry) Hanselman of Pickens, SC; Kathleen (Bobby) Blake of Atlantic, IA; Colleen (Bill) Gulley of Lancaster, CA; Heather (Rik) Tarnoff of Palmdale, CA; 15 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sisters, Ola Maye Simpson and Edna Louise (Glenn McWilliams) Coan, Dunnellon, FL; several in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Jim was preceded in death by both parents, sister Jayne Ballatore, brothers Lindy, Charlie, Chet and Larry Coan.

Jim became a believer, surrendering his life to Christ just a few short years ago. If one were to pick up Jim's Bible, that person would find several passages of scripture marked that had significant meaning to Jim. This was also true of the devotional book he would read daily. One comment that Jim had scribbled on an index card and tucked away in his Bible reads, "God will never fail the people who put their trust in Him". This is a statement that Jim would want to share with all those who tarry on this earth.
