Lindy Coan 52, was killed in the fiery collision of his car and a truck at the south junction of U.S. 421 and U.S. 6. Coan was westbound on U.S. 6 rounding a curve when his car and a semi rig driven by Paul F. Thorton, of Wadsworth, OH. Thornton was unhurt.
The car burst into flames. Coan was burned over 75 percent of his body, sheriff said Coan died of massive head & chest injuries . Police measured 33 feet of skid marks from the Thornton vehicle.
Born Feb 3, 1928 in Lake County, he was the son of John and Hazel (Williams) Coan.
He was employed as a carpenter for Lakeshore Floors, Gary. A lifelong are resident Coan was a member of Calumet Lodge 379 F & AM, VFW Post 2511, Porter, and a lifelong member of the National Rifle Assn.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Debbie) Hoestermann, St. Louis, MO., and Mrs. Lewis (Donna Ziegenfuss, Seminole, FL., ; three sister, Jane Ballatore, LaPorte; Mae Simpson, Burns Harbor, and Louise Hunt, North Liberty; three brothers, Charles Coan, Huntington, TX; Chester Coan, Burns Harbor, and James Coan, Lancaster, CA., and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Gary, one brother, Larry, and one sister Jane.
Services at Carl Edmonds Funeral Home, Chesterton, In., and burial in Chesterton Cemetery.
