James was born in Fishville, Iowa, and graduated from Highland Park College in Des Moines in 1908.

In June, 1917, he was working as an "electrician" for the Three Forks Portland Cement Co. in Trident, MT. (WWI registration card.) He rode his Indian motorcycle from Trident to LA in 1915, visiting his sister, Martha Jackson. (See photo.)

James and Florence Eden Maxey were married on December 22, 1917 in Helena, MT. They lived in Lewistown, MT and moved to Great Falls in 1923. He owned Electric Motor Service at 109 2nd Street South. The estate appraisal of his business was 20,150.69 (1954). They had two children: James Lennard and Jane McDonald.

He was a member of Great Falls Masonic Lodge 118 AF & AM , Scottish Rite Bodies, Algeria Shrine Temple of Helena, and the First Methodist Church.

He died of a heart attack way too early.

Funeral services were held at W.H. George Chapel with Great Falls Lodge 118 AF & AM officiating.
