Mr Leighton Buck, 98, of State Center, died Saturday evening, August 14, at the State Center Manor.

Graveside funeral services were held at 2:00 pm Thursday at the Hillside cemetery at State Center with the Rev Don Rothweiler of the St Paul Lutheran church officiating. Cremation rites followed visitation.

Born on May 16, 1901, in State Center, he was the son of Corydon and Mary Olive Beatty Buck. At a young age his father died and his mother remarried to Mr William Daniels.

Mr Buck was united in marriage to Clara Henze and they have made their home in the State Center area all of their married lives until her death in 1988. Prior to WWI, he was an auto mechanic and during the war, he was employed in the naval yards in Portland, Oregon. After WWI, he raised chinchillas and built Butler Grain Bins in the Central Iowa region. Around 1920 he served in the United States Signal Battalion Corps in Panama. Mr Buck was a talented, self-taught gentleman who enjoyed his family, his cats, antique power equipment and knowing how things worked and ran. He built several family heirlooms out of maple and walnut that James and Darlene and their children now treasure.

Surviving his are his son James, (Darlene) Buck of Hastings, Minnesota; three grandsons, Steve Buck of Springfield, Oregon, Kevin Buck of Duluth, Minnesota and Jim Buck Jr of Anoka, Minnesota; seven great grandchildren; three sisters, Maxine Hindt of Bullhead City, Arizona, Norma Corbin of Nevada and Zella Benson of Grinnell.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife in 1988, his son Marcus in 1996, two brothers and one sister- Rapha Leroy Buck, George Marcus Buck and Vesta Renbarger.
