Born in 1920, in Allen County, she was the daughter of William J. and Rosalind Esther Surfus. She was the youngest of nine children.
She graduated from Huntertown High School and lived most of her life in Leo. She worked in the family business for many years.
She was a member of the Cedar Creek Golf Club, Leo Lanes, the American Legion Auxiliary Post 409 and the Leo Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She played bridge, loved music, sports, entertaining and travel. She was a devoted and loving wife, a wonderful mother, grandparent and friend. She enjoyed her life to the fullest!
She is survived by two daughters, Sally Zimny of Indianapolis and Jean Stelle of Fort Wayne. Also surviving are two grandsons, Ed (Jennifer) Zimny of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Erik (Elizabeth) Stelle of Bloomington; three great-grandchildren, Ava Zimny, Connor and Lucy Stelle; and one sister, Dora Houser of Auburn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Levon "Benny" Bender, in 1998.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Leo United Methodist Church, 13527 Leo Road, with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 2 t o 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1302 E. Dupont Road. Burial in Leo Cemetery.
