William John Surfus was born in Indiana. He married Rosalind Esther Kistler November 24, 1898. They had eight children: William, Ralph, Walter, Mildred, Jessie, Dora, Ernest and Grace.Final Rites Tuesday For John Surfus, 80

John William Surfus, age 80, who had resided on Rt. 2, Auburn, for the past 55 years, died at the Dr. Bonnell M. Souder hospital in Auburn at 1:45 p.m. Saturday of a complication of diseases.

Mr. Surfus had been ill for three years and had been confined to his bed for 16 weeks. He entered the hospital 13 weeks ago.

Mr. Surfus was born in Cedar Creek township, Allen county, on Jan. 5, 1873, the son of the late Steven and Ellen Cornell Surfus.

On Nov. 24, 1898, he and Miss Rosa Kistler were united in marriage.

The family residence is located eight miles south of Auburn on state road 427. Surviving besides the widow are eight children, W. Leonard Surfus of Rt. 1, Grabill, Ralph Surfus of R t. 1, Auburn, Walter Surfus of Rt. 13, Fort Wayne, Mrs. Mildred Hefty of Rt. 2, Auburn, Jesse Surfus of Rt. 1, Auburn, Mrs. Dora Houser of Rt. 2, Auburn, Ernest Surfus of Rt. 2, Auburn and Mrs. Grace Bender of Rt. 1, Grabill; a brother, Ray Surfus of Rt. 2, Auburn, 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A son, three brothers and two sisters preceded Mr. Surfus in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Gerig funeral home in Auburn at 2 p. m. Tuesday and burial will follow in Cedar Chapel cemetery.

It has been suggested that his first name is John-- it is on legal documents with William first and some with John as first name. Perhaps a family member will straighten it out. Tombstone does list William.
