Arthur Jonathan Arnold, 93, of Mount Vernon died Thursday morning, February 23, 2017 at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon. He was born June 24,1923 in Howard to the late Johnathan and Virgilia (Gardner) Arnold.
Arthur Jonathan Arnold was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Gertrude Barrett Arnold; his son, Paul Joseph Arnold; granddaughter, Jacquelyn Suzanne Durbin; daughter-in-law, Alice (David) Arnold; his parents, Johnathan and Virgilia; brothers, Edward, Bernard, Dwight, Charles and Donald Arnold; brothers-in-law, Charles Meyer, Thomas Hartman and Walter Koss; and sister-in-law, Catherine (Charles) Arnold.
Art is survived by his seven children, Margaret Hanna, Carol (Dr. Thomas) Mark, Patricia (Ben) Durbin, Robert (Linda), David, Richard (Bridget) and Elizabeth; daughter-in-law, Karen (Paul); and 23 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He will also be missed by his siblings, Ruth Hartman, Lucille Meyer, Mary Koss and James (Diana) Arnold; sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Edward) Arnold and Marilyn (Donald) Arnold; his aunt Polly Gardner; many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A lifelong faith Catholic, Art’s formative years began on his family’s farm and at Saint Luke in Danville. He graduated second in his class from Howard High School and served in the US Army during WWII, deploying to Japan. After his discharge from the Army, Art worked as a butcher/grocer for James Hayes in Gambier, eventually buying the store and renaming it the Village Market. He moved his growing family to Mount Vernon, where he was an active member of Saint Vincent de Paul.
In his spare time, Art was an avid gardener and reader; he followed the Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers and Indians (at whose game he celebrated his 90th birthday with some of his children and grandchildren) and would play cards with anybody, anywhere and anytime.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 pm on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon where a Vigil service conducted by Rev. Father Homer Blubaugh following the visitation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 6, 2017p at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond as the Celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic School Scholarship Fund, 206 East Chestnut St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
