Abel Crowfoot, born in 1829 in England, living in Chicago with his wife and small children was drafted in 1864. He, however, did not serve. Federal laws allowed exemptions from this draft which could be purchased for $300.00 or by hiring a substitute. An entry in a record book Abel kept from 1861 to 1868 reads: " Monies donated by different individuals for the benefit of Abel Crowfoot to help him buy a substitute to put in his place as a Drafted man of the U.S. Army."
