John Crowfoot was born and raised in New York, moved to rural Wisconsin with his family.

He entered the Civil War in 1861, serving with Company I, 29th Wisconsin Regiment.

Following the war he returned to his home, where he married Lydia Thayer in 1867.

Due to a war time injury John and his family moved in search of a healthier climate.

They first homesteaded at Lodgepole, NE, where diphtheria struck, claiming four of the children in 1892.

The family went to California, but in 1895 the family returned to the plains, settling in Sedgwick, living temporarily in a dugout. Later building a sod house for the family.

Following John's death in 1915, Lydia tended the household, the children and raised hens for eggs, produce, and oats.
