Darlene Violet Pagel, age 87, of Tama died Friday afternoon, May 5, 2006 at Southridge Nursing and Rehab Center in Marshalltown under the care of Iowa River Hospice following a short illness. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, May 8, 2006, 10:30 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama with burial following at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be from 4-8 PM Sunday at the Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with the family present from 6-8 PM.

Darlene was born on December 20, 1918 in Toledo, the daughter of Alva and Lottie (Yetley) Applegate. She graduated from Toledo High School. She married Harold Pagel on December 3, 1938 at the St. Paul Lutheran Parsonage in Tama. Darlene formerly worked at the Bee Hive in Tama and also as a homemaker, caring for her home and family. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and crafts, but especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Darlene was a member of Tama Civic Women, Miriam Circle, and Oakhill Cemetery Association.

She is preceded in death by parents and three brothers Ward, Glen, and Lowell Applegate.

Survivors include her husband Harold of Tama; a son Roger (Marty) of Bellevue, Nebraska; a daughter Kay (Curt) Olthoff of Iowa City; five grandchildren, Scott (Angie) Pagel, Shelby (Lance) Bartlett, Shawn (Michele) Pagel, Kelli Olthoff, and Chris (Kami) Olthoff; eight great-grandchildren Bethanie, Zachary, Joshua, and Mollie Pagel, Luke and Madyson Bartlett, and Kaitlyn and Alexis Pagel; one brother Dwight (Shirley) Applegate of Marshalltown; three sisters Twyla Wagaman of Marshalltown, Wanda Berhow of Marshalltown, and Gloria Ohrt of Marshalltown; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund has been established.
