Wanda (Appelgate) Berhow-Phipps
Wanda Mary Appelgate passed away peacefully, in the presence of her loving family, on October 5, 2012 at Marshalltown Community Hospital.
Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel in Marshalltown. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Wanda and her family. Ph. 641-844-1234.
Wanda was born in Toledo, Iowa on December 17, 1926 to Alva E. and Charlotte "Lottie" (Yetley) Appelgate. Wanda graduated from Toledo Public School with a Normal School Training certificate and later attended Marshalltown Community College and Iowa State Teachers College. In the year following her high school graduation, she directed the Toledo Marching Band as drum majorette. She went on to teach country school and at Sac and Fox Day School. Teaching the little ones was a most important activity throughout her working life. She and her second husband James "Jim" Berhow joined the service of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and continued her teaching career at White Shield School in North Dakota. She taught for 20 years in the Speech Department at Pleasant Hill School in Marshalltown where she was proud of the many teaching resource materials she developed and the many children she influenced.
Wanda was married to C.E. "Pepper" Martens in 1949, and lived in Meadville, Missouri where two children were born; Steve (in 1950) and Mitzi (in 1953). Throughout her life she performed as a soprano vocal soloist in community choruses and directed childrens' church choirs. She married Jim Berhow on December 25, 1965 and for nearly 40-years they worked hard together, remodeling houses and cabins, and doing their best to quietly assist others with gifts, support, and generosity. Together they raised their family; Steve (JoAnna) Martens, Mitzi (Grover) Seaboldt, and stepson Rick Berhow, giving them a good education and a good start on life. They were especially proud and loving toward their grandchildren, George, Joshua, and Abigail.
In her second "career" Wanda truly enjoyed working as a sample demonstrator at Hy-Vee, mostly because it gave her an opportunity to interact with people. After she moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in 2008, she married Charles Phipps in August, 2009. She was so pleased that his children David Phipps, Rod (Beverly) Phipps, Paul (Gloria) Phipps, Theresa (David) Cahalon, and Gloria Coser became part of her family life.
She requested that her body be donated to the University of Iowa to benefit others. Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Ward, Glen, and Lowell Appelgate, sister Darlene Pagel, her longtime husband Jim, and her dearly loved grandson Joshua. She is survived by children Steve (JoAnna) Martens of Fargo, ND; Mitzi (Grover) Martens Seaboldt, St. Joseph, MO; a stepson Rick (Dawn) Berhow of New Bedford, WV; brother Dwight (Shirley) Appelgate of Toledo, sisters Twyla Wagaman of Marshalltown and Gloria Ohrt of Marshalltown; grandchildren George Quinn, Chillicothe, MO and Abigail (Adam) Boies, Cambridge, UK; her husband Charles and his children; numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial donations to the Children's Miracle Network are encouraged.
