George E. Garrett 1st Counselor To Bishop Burns, Dies
George E. Garrett, 64, first counselor to Bishop James E. Burns of the Bountiful Second ward, died at his home Monday night after several week's illness with heart trouble and asthma.
Mr. Garrett was a carpenter and building contractor and was quite extensively engaged in the bee business.
He had always been an earnest church worker and had served in the Second ward bishopric with Bishop Jed Stringham and Bishop Burns, twenty-one years - ever since the ward was organized, being first counselor at the time of his death.
Mr. Garrett was born May 19, 1872, in Nephi, son of Henry and Ann Ashdown Garrett but lived in Bountiful practically all his life.
He married Elvira Thomas, daughter of the late Edward and Sarah Crosby Thomas, Sep. 14, 1898.
Mr. Garrett made an enviable record fort the even tenor of his ways, his industry and social ability.
Surviving are his widow and three daughter, Mrs. Erma Mortensen and Mrs. Eilda Mattson, Los Angeles, and Mrs. Thelma Robinson, Salt Lake City and a son Walter Garrett, Los Angeles; the following brothers and sisters: David, Joseph, Edward and Jed Garrett, all of Salt Lake; Fred and Charles Garrett, Mrs. Martha Wiseman, Mrs. Ida Hepworth, Mrs. Elizabeth Atkinson, Mrs. Rose Burningham, all of Bountiful; Mrs. Mabel Keiffer, Los Angeles, and Mrs. Lucy Barlow, Ocean Park, California.
Funeral services will be held this Friday afternoon in the Bountiful Second ward chapel under the auspices of Bishop Burns and interment will be in the Bountiful cemetery.
