Laura Lee Coffey was the first child of Michael Smith Coffey and Nancy Anastasia Kerby.

Laura married Bolivar Clifton Shelton on August 20, 1891 in Coryell County, Texas.

As the cotton boll weevils ruined the families crops in Coryell County, that was when Laura's parents moved to Tarpley, Bandera County, Texas around 1899. Laura and Bolivar moved with them to search out a new means of making a living. They packed up all of their belongings and their two sons (James Cicero and Marcus Harvey) and made the move. Unfortunately, the boll weevils made the move with them.

Michael Smith Coffey gave Laura and her husband 120 acres of property in Tarpley to live on. Laura and Bolivar later sold the property so that they could move to Arizona. The property exchanged hands several times until Jacob Elzie Dean purchased the property in the early 1950's. The old homestead fireplace that was used by Laura Lee Coffey-Shelton still stands on this property to this day.

Sometime before 1930, Bolivar and Laura made their next move to Marinette, Maricopa County, Arizona.

Laura was preceded in death by her second son, Marcus Harvey Shelton.
