John Waller Coghill was the older of two children born to Benjamin Coleman Coghill and his first wife, Millicent Ellett. His sister was Millicent Ellett Coghill. His mother died when he was only four years old. Before he was ten, his father (who had remarried, to his first wife's cousin Mary Ann Ellett) left Virginia and became one of the pioneering families of Warren County (later to become Henderson County), Illinois.

John married Elisabeth Tucker of Roseville on August 11, 1858 in Warren County. They had seven children:
Benjamin (June 13, 1859-Oct 26, 1876)
Caroline or Carrie (Dec 4, 1860-June 8, 1936)
James Tucker (Nov 24, 1862-Jan 26, 1888)
John Waller, Jr (May 10, 1868-Jul 23, 1930)
George Ellett (Mar 17, 1872-Jul 23, 1941)
William Hawed (Mar 14, 1876-Oct 16, 1964)
Millicent Abigail (July 17-Oct 10, 1879).

When first married, John was a miller, probably working for Joseph Hollingsworth (a relative through Joseph's wife Adaline) at his flour mill. However, he went on to farm first in Henderson County near Oquawka and later in Warren County near Roseville. He and Elisabeth retired to Monmouth, Illinois but, upon his death, he and daughter Caroline moved to Lawrence, Kansas to be closer to his son George who was a professor of anatomy at the University of Kansas. When he died there, his body was returned to Roseville for burial beside his wife. Three of his children had preceded him in death.
